Adirondack Ticket to Ride

Cyclists lucky enough to be in the Adirondacks this week are enjoying superb biking weather. A freak late May heat wave has delivered record-breaking high temperatures throughout the Adirondacks the past few days. It was 92 degrees here in Lake Placid yesterday. This is almost as nice as a 15-degree-day on skis! As evidence of Mother Nature’s love of good planning (she’s a she), these same high temps quickly warm up the lakes enough for a refreshing swim. Synchronicity at its finest. Take it from an expert in recreational sciences, a swim in Mirror Lake, or any Adirondack lake for that matter, is a perfect way to top off a nice, long bike ride through the Adirondacks.
Clearly, others agree with me as action is picking up around the Village as athletes and outdoor enthusiasts head to the Adirondacks for fun and training. The sun is out and life is good. Once can see why Lake Placid was chosen as America’s best outdoor town.

    Hi Joann,

I'm looking to fly fish during the Hex hatch on Lake Placid this July, which is what I'm pretty sure you are refering to here. The only bit of info I would like to ask for is where on the lake to focus. Could you provide a few areas of the lake on which to concentrate, where canoe access is nearby, since I'll be fishing into the night. Just thought I would ask since I see you've been there.

"I can attest however, one can catch large rainbow trout on a fly rod on Lake Placid. In my experience it had nothing to do with water temperature because the fish were hanging around near the surface looking for a certain kind of fly that hatches in the summertime, but that is another fish story all together."

    Hi Paul,
I have fished the Hex hatch on Lake Placid from the lake's outlet area accessed from the Peninsula Trails and have had success. Mine should not the last word on this however as I do not fish much at all. You might give the Orvis shop in Lake Placid a call for more information.
    Thanks for reading.

    Thanks Joann,
I've walked the Peninsula trails with my daughter this past spring so I'll consider it. Good luck with the house and have a great summer.
    Paul
